How Much Fruit Can You Eat and Reverse Your Prediabetes?

“Not too much fruit!”

“You can’t have a banana every day.”

And on and on and on…

Does this sound familiar?

Have you ever wanted another handful of grapes but you weren’t so sure if you should?

Or have you ever felt frustrated by seeing information online or hearing from {ahem} “helpful” people about that evil banana you’re eating?

There is so much confusion around fruit.

But it even gets more confusing when you have prediabetes.

And if you look online, you can easily get overwhelmed by the amount of information there about good carbs vs. bad carbs.

And fruit is no stranger to the bad press.

But after you’ve looked online for what feels like 10 hours, you just want some answers you can trust already.

That’s where I come in 🙂

Here’s the deal with fruit:

  1. Fruit has 2 kinds of carbs generally speaking
  2. The 2 kinds are: sugar and fibre
  3. The sugar is called “fructose” (Fruct = fruit; -ose = sugar)
  4. Fructose has a naturally low glycemic index, which means it won’t spike your blood sugars
  5. The fibre also helps to keep the glycemic index low, meaning it doesn’t spike your blood sugar

So not only does fruit not spike your blood sugar, it also provides major nutrition.

Fruit provides fibre, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other bioactive compounds that we don’t even know about yet!

Without fruit in your day, you’ll likely:

  • Crave simple sugars
  • Not get enough fibre
  • Miss out on major antioxidants

And this could totally sabotage your changes of reversing your prediabetes if you try to follow a diet plan that is too low in carbs.

I’ve blogged before about the importance of including carbohydrates into your diabetes prevention diet.

And if you cut waaaaay back on fruit, you’re missing out on some of the healthiest carbohydrates out there.

Not to mention, you’ll deprive yourself of some of the sweetest foods around – and why cut back on sweet stuff when you don’t have to, right?
