April Saunders, BSc, MPH, RD, CDE
Born in Toronto, Ontario, April spent most of her school-aged years in Winnipeg, Manitoba. April graduated university with a Bachelor of Science in Human Nutritional Sciences from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. In her undergrad years, April experienced a life-changing event, as she traveled to Guyana, South America with a group of volunteers and facilitated breast-feeding and nutrition workshops for local mothers and their children.
A few years later, as part of her dietetic internship, she traveled to Repulse Bay, Nunavut as a student researcher examining the food system there. She was the first dietetic intern ever to have a placement in Nunavut.
From the jungles of Guyana to the frozen tundra of Nunavut, April then moved back to her roots in Ontario and delved into the areas that would become her passions – diabetes and research.
As co-investigator of her own diabetes education centre program, she was able to hone her research skills, while attempting to make the program better for patients with diabetes.
She became so intrigued by the complex reasons behind people’s health-related behaviours, April completed a Masters of Public Health from the University of Waterloo.
After a few years coaching people to reach and maintain their best health, she started her own private nutrition consulting business: April Saunders Nutrition. On her site, she shares easy and healthy recipes that are her family’s favourites to inspire other families to cook food at home.
For the past (almost!) 10 years, April has worked with countless people to help prevent, manage and control their diabetes by empowering them with knowledge and providing the resources they need to make changes to their lifestyle. She believes that with the right support and knowledge, anyone can successfully manage their diabetes and she thrives on helping people control their diabetes – not the other way around.
April has a husband and two young and energetic sons who constantly inspire her to learn more, laugh a lot and cook easy and delicious dishes! She looks forward to working with you.
